FMbot - Send Instant Messages to FileMaker Pro!

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

A dedicated AIM client application receives a message, and based on the contents of that message, returns a custom response. FMbot receives the initial message and queries a database (or multiple databases), and the response is sent back over IM to the requestor.

What databases does it search?

The databases that are searched are fully customizable.

How does it decide which result to send back?

The returned result is determined by the priority you set to that particular search.

Why does it split answers up onto several lines?

The amount of text that can be sent in one instant message is limited, so the FMbot breaks up responses into multiple lines. The length of the responses is also customizable.

Why does it pause between responses?

Instant messenger services also limit the number of messages sent within a particular time period. For this reason, the FMbot must have a delay between responses.

How do I make sure only certain people can access my filemaker information?

FMbot allows two security options:

  1. Allow anyone.
  2. Allow certain screen names. If somebody who isn't on FMbot's list tries to use FMbot, they will receive a customizable response.

What if someone spoofs my instant messenger account info? can they get to my data?

No. The method by which FMbot retrieves your data is self-contained and secure. The only information stored by AOL is your instant message account username and password.

How secure is my information while I am using FMbot?

Messages transmitted over AOL Instant Messenger are transmitted in clear text, and may be able to be read by third parties. We recommend against retrieving sensitive information using FMbot.

How secure is the information displayed on the computer running FMbot?

It's as secure as the login and password you specify for the database access. For added security, we recommend activating a screen saver with password protection, or running FMbot on a computer in a private area.
